About Periyar University

Named after Thanthai Periyar, this state university was established in 1997. Though a relatively new university, it has expanded admirably since its creation: from three departments originally – commerce, geology and mathematics – the number stands at 18 today. About 54,000 students are studying at PU right now.

Periyar University is in the name of a renowned social reformer, who believed education is for spreading knowledge and skills to equip people. Thus the motto: ‘Wisdom maketh world’.

Located in Salem, Tamil Nadu on an area spanning 100 acres, the campus is located in lush surrounding of hills and mountains. Over 60 colleges come under Periyar University and are found either in Salem city or in surrounding districts. Other educational institutes are also affiliated with the public university.

It is UGC affiliated and has been accredited with NAAC (B+ grade). PU has a chancellor, a vice-chancellor, a pro-chancellor, a senate, a syndicate, a standing committee, a finance committee and a planning board, all of which together run the university. It chancellor is the governor of Tamil Nadu, Sri Surjith Singh Barnala; the vice-chancellor is Dr. K. Muthuchelian.

Being a new university, it is currently in major expansion mode, and is looking for another 200 acres to build new departments and start new courses: environmental science, geo-informatics, botany, nanotechnology and biotechnology being a few fields of interest that will be seeing activity.

It is also forming close links with government agencies such as Indian Space Research Organization, Geological Survey of India and Defence Research and Development Organization.

Administrative reforms are also in the running. Currently utilizing a demand draft system for fees, PU will be introducing the chalan system from January 2011. Different functions are also being automated – from examinations to finance. A new website is under construction. This is all in a bid to raise efficiency level and rise to the level of a global university.

This is also the reason why PU is found on Facebook, Twitter, and uploads official videos on YouTube.

One of the most interesting facets of PU is its extra-curricular drive. It is part of the National Service Scheme (NSS), and has had up till now 11,000 volunteers spread across 35 colleges. These volunteers have been involved in projects upholding causes such as literacy, health and hygiene, environment, and social awareness. Village reconstruction, fund-raising activities, tree planting drives and other such communal services led to Periyar University’s NSS volunteers winning national recognition.

That isn’t all. The state university also started a Youth Red Cross Society, which holds blood donation camps. A Red Ribbon Club is specifically devoted to the issues of HIV / AIDS / STDS. Periyar University is also part of the National Cadet Corps (NCC) scheme.
